This feature is also called Stuðlabergsfoss, which translates to Basalt Column Falls due to the impressive hexagonal basalt columns that the waterfall pours over. These columns are rare features around the world, and those located here are some of the tallest in the country: up to twenty meters each.
Litlanesfoss, also called Stuðlabergsfoss, which means Basalt Column Waterfall, is a 35 meter waterfall of the Hengifossá river in Fljótsdalur valley. What makes this waterfall special, are the hexagonal basalt columns that surround it - some of Europe's tallest basalt columns.
For centuries the outhouses of Hjarðarhagi were in a cluster of six buildings, most of them still in use until the 1970’s. Today, the two old sheephouses are the only ones still standing, the others were demolished in the 1970’s to make space for Road No 1. The style and materials of the buildings are traditional, turf, stone and wood, and roofs lined with brushwood under a cover of turf.
