Animal-shaped bushes at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka
Each of the avenues in the Royal Botanical Gardens is lined with a different type of palm tree, and named accordingly — Royal Palm Avenue, Cabbage Palm Avenue, etc. The palmyra palm’s Sri Lankan variety (Borassus flabellifer) is prevalent in the northern part of the island and rarely seen further south. The Royal Botanical Gardens were established by Britain in 1843, after it had finally subjugated the entire country with the capture of Kandy in 1815; however, royal gardens were kept here by the Lankan kings as far back in time as the 14th century.
